June 20, 2005 — Philadelphia, PA — The Sapphire Fund, a nonprofit charitable organization supporting Philadelphia's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, announced today that it is accepting applications for beneficiaries of its 2006 funding cycle. Applications will be available on the Sapphire Fund website or may be obtained via email request to info@sapphirefund.org. The deadline for receipt of completed applications is July 29.
"Sapphire Fund is proud to support the GLBT community by providing funding and resources to local organizations engaging in advocacy, the arts, and HIV/AIDS research, education, prevention and treatment," said Brad Richards, president of Sapphire Fund’s board of directors. "We welcome grant applications from the diverse groups that contribute to our community, and we look forward to continuing the philanthropic tradition with our 2006 beneficiaries."
In the past two years, Sapphire Fund has distributed more than $175,000 to the GLBT community through its beneficiaries, including The William Way Community Center, MANNA, The Attic Youth Center, and Safe Guards, as well as supporting and promoting other worthy organizations such as the 2004 Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
The Fund made grants totaling $51,000 to its 2005 funding cycle beneficiaries. The William Way Community Center, the Center for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights and St. Mary's Family Respite Center each received $17,000 in a ceremony held May 25 at the William Way Community Center. This was the inaugural cycle of the Fund’s new year-round fundraising model.
In preparation for its new fiscal year, Sapphire Fund held board elections on May 17. Additionally, four new board members were elected: City Solicitor Romy L.
